Break O'Day Stitchers News

April 2024

Members of BODS have been busy meeting each Friday after a short break over January. Plans are in place for a group quilt entry into the Island Quilts TGQ exhibition in September.

Friendship Day has been set for September on Friday the 13th with a theme around superstitions.

Check our Facebook page to see what our members have been working on.

December 2023

At a recent Friday meeting two of our long term, hardworking members were awarded Life Membership for their contributions to BODS. Check out our Facebook page to see the presentation photos.

Along with the very successful Easter Exhibition the group has been very busy over the year creating another group entry into the Island Quilts exhibition, a quilt for the Guide Dogs of Tasmania to raffle and a quilt for the RFDS Tasmania to raffle. Some members also entered their creations in the Scottsdale Show.

Funds raised by the group at our recent Friendship Day have been donated to the RFDS.

Our Christmas lunch is fast approaching and there will be one more Friday meeting at the Bungalow on the 15th of December before a short break.

Members will gather again on Friday 12th of January at the Bungalow.

July 2023

Members have been continuing to meet each Friday at the Bungalow and always look forward to meeting new faces.

Some of our group spent a wonderful day with the lovely ladies of Busy Fingers at Bicheno. Thank you to our hosts for a great day of sharing and companionship.

Our group quilt, Wacky Dogs, has been put together. Many thanks to those who spent hours on the final piecing and quilting.

Friendship Day is fast approaching.

June 2023

Our AGM has been held. Thank you to our office bearers for consenting to a continuation of their roles as all were re-nominated unopposed. Thank you also to all members for their continued participation in the construction of community quilts. Members have also been busy working on blocks for the group's entry in Island Quilts this year.

Our AGM will be held on Friday June 30th followed immediately by our monthly meeting. All members are  reminded that our yearly subs are due before the AGM. As part of the AGM a motion to ammend the constition will be put forward for voting. Information was distributed to members at the last general meeting as per the requirements of our constitution.

April 2023 cont....

Break O'Day Stitchers thank the community for the support given to them over Easter. The first exhibition held since 2019 was seen by many and as a result the group will be able to donate and support local charities and the RFDS as they have done after past exhibitions.

Attendees to the exhibition voted on their favourite piece in the display, and the Viewers’ Choice prizes were awarded to: 1st, Barbara Mellor’s “By the Lake”, 2nd, Pam Sullivan’s “Lest We Forget” and in 3rd place, Patricia Hughes’ “Peter Pan”.

A few visitors expressed a wish to vote for the Royal Flying Doctor quilt in the brilliant colours of our own Bay of Fires.   This lovely piece was not made by a single artist, but by many members of the club contributing one or more blocks each.  The whole project was planned, curated and pieced by the phenomenon that is Sue Hinds, using a design called “The Traveller’s Wife” by quilt artist Jen Kingwell.   The quilt is to be displayed at Agfest in May and will then be the subject of a silent auction on behalf of the Royal Flying Doctors.    The Stitchers are pleased to report the recent official valuation of the quilt at $2850.  This valuation was completed by the expert appraisers of the Tasmanian Quilters Guild.

Another part of the Exhibition was the annual club Challenge which received 18 entries.    This year’s “Paint Chip Challenge” was to produce a small, stitched textile piece, using a limited range of colours, decided by a lucky draw of 3 paint chips.  A well-deserved 1st prize went to Patricia Justin, while 2nd and 3rd prizes went to Pam Sullivan and Sue Courtis respectively.

Of course, we want to also thank the following kind sponsors, without whom there would be no nice prizes for the Stitchers!    Sincere thanks to our favourite traders, Judy Duckett of Bagdad Quilting Supplies and Deb Vince of Tas Cottage Industries, who donated prizes for the Viewers’ Choice and the Challenge, along with Barbara Mellor.

Many thanks to members and friends who filled the rosters over the weekend.   And last, but definitely not least, a million thank yous to the Set-Up and Take-Down Army, comprised of members, spouses and draftees, who did such a sterling job of putting the show together and then taking it down again.  And all with patience and good humour in the face of high degrees of confusion and panic in some quarters!

Our busy stitchers have also just completed another community quilt for the Royal Guide Dogs Association and continue to meet each Friday in the Bungalow. Come along between 10 and 3 and join in with the creating.

Check our Facebook page for more details of the groups creative exploits.

April 2023

A successful Easter Exhibition at the Portland Hall in St Helens closed on April the 9th with the drawing of the BODS raffle and presentation of prizes. Many volunteers helped with setting up, manning the sales tables and other daily jobs, selling raffle tickets and packing up this amazing showcase of the creative works made by members of BODS. Monies raised by the group will be donated to the RFDS and other local groups.

Check out our Facebook page to see what is next for the group.
